Power generation increases by 12% in Jan26 YoY basis

ISLAMABAD: The country’s power generation has witnessed an increase of 12 per cent in to 9,140 Gwh in January 2026 as compared to 8,153 GWh in January 2025 but financial impact showed a hike of 10 per cent.
CPPA-G has requested a positive adjustment of Rs 1.78 per unit under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) mechanism for January 2026. The proposed adjustment would enable the Discos to recover Rs 15.6 billion from consumers and Discos and KE.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is scheduled to hold a public February 6, 2026, to examine CPPA-G’s request. The hearing will also provide an opportunity for consumer representatives to express their views on the proposed FCA adjustment.
Electricity generation from hydel declined by 17.6 per cent to 713 GWh in January 2026 from 866 GWh in January 2025. Generation from gas-based power plants was recorded 1,117 GWh, 12.23 percent of total generation at Rs 12.7439 against 1,069 GWh in corresponding month of 2025.
Generation from imported coal was 1,580 GWh (17.28 per cent of total generation) in January 2026, as compared to 695 GWh in January 2025, showing an increase of 127 per cent. The rate of imported -coal generation was Rs 13.4849 /kWh.
Electricity generation from local coal stood at 1,404 GWh (15.36 per cent of total generation) at a rate of Rs 11.6217 kWh in January 2026 against 1269 Gwh, showing an increase of 9.6 per cent. Generation from HSD was zero whereas generation from was 274 GWh against 109 GWh.
Generation from RLNG was 2,002 GWh (2.90 percent of total generation) at Rs 19.9333 per unit against 1,542 GWh in January 2025, showing increase of 30 per cent.
Electricity generation from nuclear sources was 1,599 GWh at Rs 2.2373 per unit (17.49 percent of total generation) compared with 2,169 GWh in January 2025, posting a decline of 26 per cent.
Electricity imported from Iran was 35 GWh at Rs 22.0608 per unit in January 2026 as compared to 34 GWh unit in same month of 2025.
The data further shows that net delivered electricity was 7,816 GWh in January 2026 at a rate of Rs 12.1768 per unit against 7,718 GWh in January 2025, showing an increase of 12 per cent. Ends
