ISLAMABAD : K-Electric (KE) has shared the entire plan to connect 660 Captive Power Plants with its system which with assessed load of 946 MW of which 375 connected with its system can ready to shift to the Grid, sources told Newzshewz.
The update has been shared by the KE’s Chief Executive Office (CEO), Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi with Power Division, with reference to the meeting held on May 18, 2025 at the Chief Minister Sindh House in Karachi on the transition plan for captive power users.
With regard to the captive power users in KE service area, KE has confirmed its readiness as per the estimated timelines presented during the meeting. Further, the list of all captive power users along with their estimated conversion timelines has also been shared with the Power Division.
” As also discussed during the meeting, these timelines shall only be applicable once the necessary deposit of demand notice has been provided by the customer along with completion of other codal formalities. Further, for cases where Right of Way (RoW) permissions are required, KE shall endeavour its best to secure the required approvals from the relevant authorities in a timely manner such that the committed timelines are complied with and will also request the support of relevant stakeholders, when and if needed,” Alvi said adding that the power utility company is also in discussions with the industrial customers and would be willing to give an option to construct the grid, where required, through an SPV, the cost of which shall be recovered through wheeling charges over a period of 10 to 15 years. The terms and conditions of such an arrangement shall be mutually agreed upon between KE and the customer. We assure you of our commitment and support to the Government of Pakistan in its efforts for economic stability and a sustainable power sector.
According to the KE 375 CPPs connected with its network can readily shift to Grid with sanctioned and assessed load of 328 MW. CPPs 40 CPPs are connected with KE network which will require – upto 3 months with 22 MW existing sanctioned load but assessed load will be 35 MW. 60 CPPs connected with KE network which will require – 3 to 8 months with sanctioned load of 110 MW and assessed load 228 MW. 141 CPPs connected with KE network which will require – 24 to 30 months with sanctioned load 201 MW and assessed load 338 MW.
The assessed load of 12 CPPs not connected with KE Network but applied for new connection will be 18 MW. However, 32 CPPs are neither connected with KE network and nor they applied for new connection.
This implies that there are total 660 CPPs in KE services area of which 616 are connected with KE network whose existing sanctioned load is 662 MW but their assessed load is 946 MW.
KE is of the view that to the extent of their existing sanctioned load, all CPPs connected with its network can be immediately served by KE. However, for assessed load, readiness is based on assessment of data available with KE and load worked out on the basis of gas supplied by SSGC to these CPPs – may change upon load requirement submitted by the consumer . For cases spanning over 24 to 30 months, as per the assessed load requirement, certain grid interventions are required.
Out of total not connected 44 CPPs, seven have applied for connection and ready to shift to grid. Out of four CPPs, one has applied for connection will require three months to connect whereas five CPPs( one applied for connection) need 3-8 months time to connect. 28 CPPs of which 12 have applied for connection will require 24-30 months to connect.
The readiness is based on assessment of data available with KE and load worked out on the basis of gas supplied by SSGC for these CPPs – may change upon load requirement submitted by the consumer,” Alvi concluded.
