ISLAMABAD : The much talked about package for reduction in electricity tariff upto Rs 8 per unit, has reportedly not been finalized due to ongoing consultation process with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), sources told Newzshewz.

Earlier reports suggested that Prime Minister will announce reduction in electricity on March 23, 2025, which  apparently did not get the  nod of IMF. On March 15,2025, reduction in POL prices had also been passed on the consumers on the justification that Prime Minister will announce a big reduction in electricity tariff and the impact of POL prices would also be made part  of the relief.

On Sunday, Prime Minister presided over a meeting on  the issues of power sector including the recent reduction in buyback rates for the new Net Metering consumers, after which the government is criticism by the public.

” A package is being prepared under a comprehensive and effective strategy to reduce electricity tariffs, which will be announced soon. Thanks to reforms in the power sector, more relief will be provided to the public in electricity prices ,  ,” said an official statement quoted  Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as saying.

Prime Minister said promotion of renewable energy is the government’s priority. He  directed relevant authorities to remove all ambiguities among the public regarding solarization policy based on facts and figures.

” There has been no change in the government’s policy and priorities regarding solar energy, all legal and other matters regarding liquidation of generation companies should be resolved as soon as possible,” Prime Minister added.

He also  directed the concerned authorities  to expedite the process of privatization of power distribution companies.

He directed to further improve coordination between Power Division, Water Resources Division and Petroleum Division for a comprehensive strategy regarding the energy sector meeting .

The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Owais Ahmed Leghari, Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr. Tauqir Shah and senior government officials concerned. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema and Advisor to the Prime Minister Muhammad Ali participated in the meeting via video link. Ends
