ISLAMABAD: The Power Planning and Monitoring Company (PPMC) has directed the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors (BoDs) and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Distribution Companies (Discos) to accelerate efforts to reduce losses, as well as to verify and correct meter alignments with the relevant transformers.
Sources told Newzshewz that PPMC, in letters sent to the Discos’ Boards and CEOs, announced that a computerized energy audit system at the distribution transformer level had been implemented across all Discos, beginning with the December 2024 billing cycle. This marks a significant milestone after extensive efforts since May 2024.
The new system generates Management Information System (MIS) reports—Transformer Energy Audit CP-22A(T)—which are integrated with the billing data of the respective transformers and made accessible online for field teams to analyze losses.
According to the letter, the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PITC) has upgraded its Mobile Meter Reading (MMR) application to include transformer meter readings. In addition, comprehensive training has been provided to Disco staff. Meter readers now collect consumer readings in a walk-order format while simultaneously taking readings from transformer scanning meters, without any additional workload.
The data is uploaded via the PITC application, reviewed by relevant offices, and incorporated into the billing process. The MIS report CP-22A(T) enables field teams to analyze losses at the transformer level and implement targeted actions. This report is already available on the web portal to aid further loss reduction efforts. Prior to this initiative, loss analyses were only performed at the feeder level.
To ensure continued success and effectively address losses at high-loss transformers, PPMC has proposed a dual-pronged strategy: (i) regularly analyze data from installed meters on high-loss transformers and implement corrective measures to meet NEPRA targets ;(ii) expand the deployment of scanning meters; (iii) verify and correct the coding of meters to ensure they align with their relevant transformers.
Additionally, PPMC has instructed all Discos to verify and correct meter coding, ensuring that consumer meters are properly tagged to their respective transformers. It has also called for the expedited installation of scanning meters on high-loss transformers and the collection of necessary data for PITC to update the mobile application used by meter readers.
PPMC believes that this strategy will maximize the installation and operational effectiveness of the system, enabling Discos to significantly reduce AT&C (Aggregate Technical and Commercial) losses.
