SNGPL faces critical situation due to RLNG less take-off by power sector

ISLAMABAD: Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Company Limited (SNGPL) has expressed serious on rapid saturation of system pack due to less RLNG off-take by the RLNG-fired power plants.

SNGPL has brought to the notice of Petroleum Division that RLNG consumption by power sector dropped to 295 MMCFD on August 28, 2024 and led to packing of our system by 215 MMCF.

Power has consumed at an average 506 MMCFD RLNG during August-2024 against demand of 600 MMCFD. This has resulted in our system pack crossing its critical levels, with the opening pack at 5030 MMCF this morning.

Currently, Power is consuming around 215 MMCFD and further packing of 200 MMCF which is unsustainable. Moreover, SSGC has been retaining an average of 88 MMCFD against demand of 130

MMCFD in August, which has also contributed to saturation of system pack. If the situation in not addressed, regasification from terminals may potentially be adversely affected and may disrupt the whole supply chain leading to delays in cargo offloading, incurring Take-or-Pay charges/demurrages.

In order to mitigate the impact of the low off-take by Power over the past few days, SNGPL has already curtailed gas supplies from indigenous sources by 115 MMCFD and further curtailment of 50 MMCFD has been implemented today. SNGPL shall be constrained to curtail more indigenous supplies if Power off-take continues to remains low. This shall result in diverting more RLNG in the lower tariff sector besides adversely effecting deliverability of gas fields due to curtailments, as repeatedly agitated by producers.

SNGPL has sought immediate intervention from Petroleum Division to take up the matter with Power Division to ensure that Power increases its consumption immediately per given demand of 600 MMCFD. SSGC may also be advised to retain @ 130 MMCFD so as to ensure smooth system operations and to avoid any untoward situation.
