ISLAMABAD: Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and Oman Trading International (OQT) are in negotiations to explore additional oil cargoes to help meet Pakistan’s growing energy demand, the Petroleum Division said on Thursday.
The development came during a meeting between Federal Minister for Petroleum, Ali Pervaiz Malik, and Fahad Bin Sulaiman Bin Khalaf Alkharusi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Pakistan, where both sides discussed the evolving regional energy situation and avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation.
The minister highlighted that Pakistan and Oman share longstanding, cordial, and brotherly relations rooted in shared history, mutual respect, and strong people-to-people ties. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to expanding the bilateral energy partnership and exploring new areas of collaboration.
During the meeting, the minister apprised the ambassador of Pakistan’s efforts to diversify its energy imports and ensure supply resilience by exploring alternative sources and routes beyond the Strait of Hormuz, amid changing regional dynamics.
The Omani ambassador welcomed Pakistan’s diversification strategy and conveyed Oman’s willingness to support the country in strengthening its energy security. The minister expressed hope that Oman would consider Pakistan’s request for preferential energy cargoes, to which the ambassador responded positively, assuring that the request would be given due consideration.
Officials informed that during March, Pakistan imported three cargoes of petrol and one cargo of diesel from Oman, while two additional petrol cargoes are expected to arrive before the end of the month.
The meeting also discussed opportunities for enhanced cooperation in the upstream sector, including exploration and production, and emphasized expanding collaboration in oil and gas development projects.
It was noted that PSO and OQT are engaged in constructive discussions to secure additional oil cargoes as part of efforts to meet domestic demand.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening Pakistan-Oman energy cooperation and deepening strategic ties for mutual benefit.
