ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is likely to inaugurate two key projects by K-Electric: the Kanupp-KE Interconnection (KKI) and the Dhabeji Grid Station. These projects are designed to improve electricity supply for consumers served by the power utility company.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, K-Electric’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi, highlighted that these landmark energy projects—the 500/220 kV Kanupp K-Electric Interconnection Grid Station and the 220 kV Dhabeji Grid Station—will enhance the reliability and affordability of the power supply to Karachi, the country’s economic hub.

According to Mr. Alvi, these infrastructure investments reflect K-Electric’s commitment to improving Karachi’s energy landscape. The interconnection between K-Electric and the National Grid will significantly boost the capacity to take an additional 800 to 1,200 megawatts (MW) from the national grid, strengthening both the affordability and stability of Karachi’s power supply. This will also support the federal government in fulfilling its capacity payment obligations. Additionally, K-Electric is leading efforts to integrate renewable energy solutions, with plans to add around 1,200 MW of green energy to its generation mix by 2030, underscoring its commitment to sustainable development.

Mr. Alvi emphasized that these initiatives are not just about increasing power supply; they will also serve as a catalyst for economic growth, driving industrial development and creating jobs in Karachi and its surrounding areas. This strategic investment aligns with the government’s vision to empower the economy and solidify Karachi as a robust hub for commerce and industry.

“Your (PM’s) presence as Chief Guest at this inaugural event would honor us and symbolize the government’s support for transformative energy projects that drive economic vitality and energy security,” Alvi concluded.

Sources indicated that the Prime Minister’s office has sought comments from the Power Division regarding the invitation from K-Electric, with hopes that the Prime Minister will attend the inauguration.
