ISLAMABAD: The government has paid over one million dollar as compensation to two Chinese nationals working on Port Qasim Electric Power Company (PQEPC) died in a suicide attack in Karachi on October 6, 2024.

  Power Division, on October 10, 2024 sought permission of the Chairman ECC to table the summary as an additional item in view of the exigency in the matter.

 The Power Division briefed the forum that on  October 6, 2024 a convoy carrying Chinese staff of the Port Qasim Electric Power Company (Private) Limited was attacked near the Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, resulting in death of two Chinese nationals and severe injury of one Chinese along with local casualties. The Power

Division strongly condemns the terrorist attack, expresses deep condolences to the innocent victims and sincere sympathies to the injured and families, and proposes payment of a compensation package for the deceased employees of Port Qasim Electric Power Company (private) limited.

The ECC of the Cabinet, on May 23, 2024 duly ratified by the Federal Cabinet approved a compensation package for the deceased employees of Dasu hydropower project amounting to US$ 516,000 per person, in accordance with the recommendations of the Inter-Ministerial Committee headed by Federal Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources.

 The Power Division further briefed the forum that in view of  and adopting the same compensation package as recommended and approved earlier by the Federal Cabinet, Power Division submits the following recommendations for consideration of the ECC: (i)  a  compensation package may be offered to each Chinese deceased employee amounting to US $ 516,000. The approved amount may be provided as Technical Supplementary Grant, to be arranged by Finance Division, as Ministry of Energy- Power Division does not have any budgetary provision for the purpose ; and (ii) the  approved amount transferred to the account of Pakistan

Embassy in Beijing, China by the Finance Division for onward payment to  the families of the deceased Chinese national through proper channel.

 The sources said, soon after the formal approval of compensation package, Power Division  approached Finance Division for arranging foreign exchange cover through State Bank of Pakistan.
