ISLAMABAD: The government’s “Apna Meter Apni Reading” initiative, launched by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is gaining traction as more consumers with Android smartphones are downloading the application to submit their monthly electricity meter readings, sources told Newzshewz.
According to officials, the Power Division is receiving regular updates from distribution companies (Discos) and the Pakistan Information Technology Company (PITC) to assess usage trends and consumer interest in the program.
Initially rolled out by leading power utilities including IESCO, LESCO, MEPCO and K-Electric, the initiative aims to make electricity billing more transparent and consumer-driven. Rising complaints of overbilling and inaccurate meter readings prompted the introduction of a system that places control directly in the hands of consumers.
Through the mobile app, users can submit their electricity meter readings via a simple interface—by either taking a photo of the meter or manually entering the digits. The submission is then verified through image recognition tools and staff review, ensuring accuracy.
The system eliminates reliance on meter readers and reduces the likelihood of estimated billing. Early feedback from pilot projects suggests fewer complaints, improved billing accuracy, and greater consumer satisfaction.
How it works ;(i) Download the App – Available on Google Play or App Store under each Disco’s name ;(ii) enter the consumer number and verify the phone number through SMS ;(iii ) receive reminders for timely submissions ;(iv) take a photo – snap a clear image of the meter without blur or glare ;(v) enter reading – Type in the digits shown on the meter ; and (vi) submit – confirm and save the submission screen.
The entire process takes less than five minutes and ensures that bills are generated on the basis of actual consumption.
The benefits of Apna Meter Apni Reading” App is more accurate billing, greater transparency in energy usage, time savings by eliminating meter reader visits, reduced complaints and disputes and easy access through smart phones anytime.
Power Minister, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari is of the view that the App will minimise overbilling complaints in power Distribution Companies (Discos). This will also do away with the role of meter readers who misuse their authority to send inflated bills to the consumers. Ends
