ISLAMABAD : The Board of Directors of Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has unanimously appointed Engineer Khalid Mehmood as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IESCO.

IESCO spokesperson said that Engineer Khalid Mehmood is known for his vast experience and strong leadership in the energy sector. Throughout his career, he has served in various key positions and has always prioritized employee welfare projects and the interests of consumers. Moreover, he has a sound experience of operations construction GSO GSE and other fields of DISCOs.

Chairman IESCO, Dr. Tahir Masood, stated that the appointment of Engineer Khalid Mehmood was made purely on merit, taking into full consideration his professional competence and qualities as a strong leader. “We are confident that he will perform this responsibility in the best possible manner, and under his leadership, IESCO will continue its journey of success with the full support of the Board of Directors,” he added.

IESCO officers and staff showed their full confidence on this appointment and said that it’s good luck for IESCO that an experienced and dedicated officer is appointed as chief Executive Officer IESCO and under his leadership IESCO will continue its journey of success.

Engr. Muhammad Naeem Jan, the former acting  CEO IESCO, was  facing mounting criticism from within the organisation, the Power Division, and the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) over his competence and handling of key responsibilities.

The controversy dates back several months, when NEPRA’s Member (Technical), Rafique Ahmad Shaikh, publicly urged the government during a hearing on IESCO’s Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) petition to remove the acting CEO, citing his failure to effectively present the company’s case.

The official has also drawn sharp criticism in the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Power, particularly over reports of massive electricity theft in upscale areas of Islamabad — an issue that lawmakers said highlighted lapses in enforcement and management under his watch.

The growing concerns over his leadership come at a time when IESCO is under pressure to curb losses, improve billing recovery, and restore public trust in its operations.

He was also one of the shortlisted candidates for the regulator CEO of the Company, but the Board did not approve him as Regular CEO. He will be retire in next few days.  Ends
